Concealed in Death

Note to self: check if the book you’re getting has a series before you buy it. Because holy moly, I came in WAY late. Nora Roberts writes this series, under the pen name JD Robb, and there are 57 books! This happens to be number 38. Whoops.

Roarke has just acquired another building. As he and his team are prepping it for a remodel, they break down old walls to find remains. Not just of one person– they find twelve sets of bones. Each set belonged to a young girl.

Enter Roarke’s wife, Lieutenant Eve Dallas. It’s her job to find out who the girls are, and why they were killed and hidden. With just the bones, it’s no easy task, but Eve is determined. She sees signs of abuse on most of the remains– something she’s all too familiar with from her own past.

Slowly, Eve and her team start to identify the girls. Most were living on the street, in and out of foster care for various reasons. The biggest connection: the building itself. Formerly known as The Sanctuary, it was a safe haven for teens who had difficult home lives. The siblings in charge, the Joneses, abandoned the building for newer, safer digs.

Eve has to sift through the past of the Jones siblings and the girls who were killed, in hopes of finding the killer. After fifteen years– the amount of time the girls had been dead– they’re families deserved that much. Eve must learn who did it, and why they haven’t killed again.

I had to get the first three books in the series, just so I would have everyone’s back story. There are a lot of references I don’t understand yet, and questions I need answered (such as, why does Roarke not seem to have a first name?).

Although this isn’t the first in the series, it was a good introduction for me. Eve Dallas is pretty kick ass, and I’m interested to see what other cases she’s faced with.
