For something with so few discernible elements, it’s remarkably easy to get lost in the work of Glasgow-based musician Maria Rossi. As Cucina Povera, she offers up a vaporous blend of ambient music, synth work, call-and-response field recordings and experimental electronica. On any given song, it’s often just Rossi’s tender singing backed by quietly nattering percussion and abstracted vocals. “Elektra,” for instance, is a slowly obambulating track where Rossi’s enticing style of singing communes with a melodic group of ghostly “oohs.” That’s effectively the crux of the song. For five-plus minutes. But the work’s pure stroke of genius is in how Rossi subtly blends these things together. By the end, they disappear into one another and the listener vanishes into the song.
