review 1: Sorry, just three stars. I love this writer and plan to read the 'next book' in her sequence. (I don't think it's really a series.) Though this story was well-written and held my attention, I was constantly confused by all the characters and similar names. I also think the translation was not done as well as the other two books I'd read by her. Do adults really 'pull a face' all that much? (Whatever that means, btw.) I know it's an English expression and I think I get it, but there were certain phrases and actions that happened over and over. But back to the multitude of characters! I can handle lots of them; I've read War and Peace, but really, so many? And with similar names? This book really could have used a small family-tree type illustration - nothing fancy or overwhe... morelming as in a historical book - but then I could have referred to whoever was meant by a sister-in-law, a grandfather, 'our uncle,' 'our great uncle' and so on and on. Also a huge staff at a hotel - try keeping them all straight. And the MC's own family and family issues. This book is a complete overload of details, personalities, whowaswherewhen, and etc. It was WORK to read it, in other words. So why not one or two stars? Because the story is GOOD. It just got bogged down a bit in some marshy writer's bog. Still love the writer, though. :D
review 2: Yrsa Sigurðardóttir very faithfull to her own style. Its a good thriller, and the added supernatural bits were a plus. As a disadvantage, it doesn't really have anything new to add the the series #1 "The last ritual". The book's structure is almost exactly the same. There are many many characters in the book which can be confusing, specially to one not used to Icelandic names. The ending is very touching. less
