review 1: Unbeknownst to me until I was two-thirds of the way through this wonderful gothic literary thriller, when it dawned on me this was a sequel. How could this possibly escape my attention? I hadn't read Florence and Giles yet that's how. But it is on my 'to read' list and thus it twigged with me somewhere in the corridors of the island mental hospital where this novel is set. One Dr. John Shepherd arrives to the island and is somewhat uncomfortable with the treatment of the women by Dr Morgan and his nursing charge O'Reilly. In an act of benevolent 'can't wait to say I told you so', Morgan allows Shepherd one patient to be under his sole care with a kinder, "moral treatment". Shepherd selects a young girl of sixteen, who talks in odd ways, but I did find that quite delightful... more. There is no mistaking her meaning however 'incorrectly' she speaks. The girl cannot read but loves books and so it is with bibliotherapy that Shepherd begins to 'treat'. Many secrets are slowly unhoused in this story and I was delightfully drawn in. I found the first person POV a little "I, I, I" at times but never lacked for a twist in the plot for me. Loved the ending. I will definitely be reading Florence and Giles now.
