Down the TBR Hole #8

A feature that helps you finally declutter your TBR shelf.

This was started by the wonderful Lia @ Lost in a Story whose blog you should definitely check out! Also, this week’s post is a bit late because uni started, so I already have less free time. SO posts might not be getting to you daily, but I’ll try to put them out at least twice a week!

How it works:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Current count of books on my to-read shelf is… 582. Which is a lot. So let’s get rid of some of them (hopefully, sometimes I massively fail)!

1. Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

There were a lot of Sarah Dessen books on my TBR, and though I love her writing and I’ve loved her books in the past, YA Contemporary doesn’t do it for me anymore, so this one is a goner. I don’t even know what’s it about.

Verdict: Goodbye

2. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

I don’t know WHY I haven’t read this yet. It’s a book that focuses on anorexia, and two best friends dealing with the illness, and the consequences of living with anorexia. It sounds really powerful and emotional, but also harrowing. I really need to up this one on my priority list.

Verdict: I am keeping you

3. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

This book sounds exactly like How To Get Away With Murder and I AM HERE FOR IT. It’s about a group of students of a prestigious college, who, under the influence of their teacher, do something really terrible. I know I am going to love this so much when I finally read it.

Verdict: I am keeping you

4. Uprooted by Naomi Novik

This is a sort of Beauty and the Beast retelling, set in a really intriguing kind of Fantasy world. It’s that sort of quaint, village setting (WOW, that’s a stupid description, but you know what I mean). There’s magic and supposedly great writing, so I am still pumped to read it.

Verdict: I am keeping you

5. The Skeleton Cupboard: Stories from a clinical psychologist by Tanya Byron

So this is a non fiction book, a sort of memoir, in which Tanya Byron talks about her profession, the people she treated and the struggles and problems of both mental health workers and people dealing with mental health issues. This topic is obviously very close to me and I am very excited to get to this.

Verdict: I am keeping you

6. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, Jim Kay and Siobhan Dowd

I have yet to read a book by Patrick Ness that I don’t enjoy. He is one of my favorite writers and I’ve loved every single one of his books that I’ve read. So I don’t know why I still haven’t picked this up. It’s his most acclaimed work. Hopefully I will rectify this soon.

Verdict: I am keeping you

7. Night Film by Marisha Pessl

THIS BOOK SOUNDS SO GOOD. It’s a mystery about the death of a young girl, who is the daughter of a famous horror film director. The story is told through the investigation of a journalist, who’s obsessed with the director and it’s told through mixed media, meaning we get to see some emails, and websites and what not. I really like the concept of it, and it’s got rave reviews so I am still looking forward to reading it.

Verdict: I am keeping you

8. The Year of the Runaways by Sunjeev Sahota

In 2015, I was on a real Man Booker kick and I wanted to read all of the books on the longlist. I added them all to my TBR, I even got them all on my Kindle, but I only ended up reading A Little Life and Did You Ever Have a Family. I loved them, but never picked up any of the rest. So I really have no idea what this is about, and I don’t see myself ever picking this one up.

Verdict: Goodbye

9. Satin Island by Tom McCarthy

This is similar to the last one. It’s a book that was on the list for Man Booker in 2015. However, this one still intrigues me. It’s a book that has caused the most controversy, and the most polarizing reviews on the list. It’s a sort of anti-novel and anti-plot experimental type of writing and I am just still very curious about it.

Verdict: I am keeping you

10. The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma

This is one of the more popular books on the Man Booker 2015 list, but I just lost interest in most of those books and this one is no different. I don’t think I’ll ever really reach for this one.

Verdict: Goodbye

Another week, another abysmal result. I do, however, really enjoy doing these posts.

The overall tally:

Total books removed since I started: 23

Current number of books on the to-read shelf: 577

Thanks for reading, let me know your thoughts on these books if you have read any of them!
