Each Peach Pear Plum: A Review

Each Peach Pear Plum, Janet Ahlberg & Allan Ahlberg, 1978

Now that I’ve finally recovered from my apple-picking trauma, I feel like I’m ready to review a book that prominently features tree fruit. Each Peach Pear Plum is a classic rhyming story that concludes with an Ewok-style pie party. m. typically ends the book with a lively “Ee chee wa maa!”

A well-respected literary scholar revealed that she doesn’t get this book. I’m not going to become an Each-Peach-Pear-Plum apologist, but I think I can add some baby perspective. It’s a visual treat, which means I have the opportunity to point at various items. I love pointing at things-bunnies, cows, horses, frogs, birds, doggies. I don’t have a lot of recognizable words yet, so pointing has become key to sharing my day-to-day experiences. This book provides non-stop pointing possibilities.

However, the cavalier attitude towards gun ownership is alarming. Who let baby bear wander through the forest with a loaded shotgun? Why is it constantly firing? It’s obvious that he never received appropriate gun-safety training. Get your acts together! *fume*

4 out of 5 doggies
