The Lord instructed Noah to build the ark and stated why he needed to do so,
“And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you” (Genesis 6.17–18).
From the time of creation to the year that the Flood came upon the whole earth was 1656 years. That was plenty of time for the world to repent, but only Noah and his family found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Our Lord is exceedingly gracious and patient, but when the wicked will not repent, He takes action against them, in this case, not sparing any of them. Therefore, the Lord can also be severe. That is why we must walk with the Lord as Noah did.
