review 1: Anna Seaton is a great character, full of charm and wit. She's working as a housekeeper, with flowers in every room and marzipan for the Earl of Westhaven. The house hums along like a well-oiled machine. But she's too well-educated for a housekeeper.Gayle Windham, the Earl of Westhaven and heir to the Duke of Moreland, finds his housekeeper attractive, very attractive but how to convince her to trust him with her secrets.Burrowes wrote a great set of supporting characters, the Duke and Duchess, and Westhaven's siblings. Best for character development, a slow sweet romance. The plot is adequate, with all the adventure at the end.
review 2: Keeps changing from a 2 star read to a 4 star read, so I am giving it 3 stars. One minute I like this book and the next I am
... morerolling my eyes.It would have worked better as a contemporary or at least set around 1900 in America...If you're going to write an English regency, please remember that you are in England and you are writing about English weather, English mannerisms, English speech, English food and English everything (all set 200 years ago)I agree with a lot of the 2 and 3 star reviews and make an example of the following annoying things :~1 ~ Too much Lemonade. Wasn't sugar really expensive ?2 ~ American style muffins in Regency England ! really ?3 ~ Pyjamas. Coffee Table. Cookies (biscuits in the UK) Fall (Autumn in the UK)4 ~ Continual, melting, summer heat in London ?? where even an Earl goes around in shirt sleeves and no cravat... The regency period (it is reported) was very cold.5 ~ Sleeping on the terrace. This is the only regency I have read where this happens. If London was really that hot, wouldn't the stink of the open gutters/sewers and the stench of the smoke make this impossible ? After all, they cooked using fires back then, London would have been drowning in smoke and coal fumes and the terrace would have been the last place to sleep.6 ~ A poker attack in the first chapter - shouldn't Gayle be deceased or have a skull fracture or something ? If Anna had used a feather duster the injuries would have been more believable.7 ~ ETC...Inconsequential points I know, but just too many and too irritating for me - so I had to rate the book down because of them. I did like the story, but these petty things just kept getting in the way of me really enjoying it.I agree with the other readers about Rose - I was confused. I also agree that I knew everything about the Earl and nothing about Anna, even though half the book was written from her viewpoint. Enough said.I will be reading the next book in the series as I have already purchased it. And several others. less
