review 1: 3.5*i read this first when it was the blog story NY Blues, and really liked it then too!Chris is dealing with being forced out of his job which has destroed any confidence he had. Though I admit to being a bit annoyed by him at times, which I dont remember from before!Daniel is the rich boy who just wants to be a cop and to reconect with his old college crush. The story is much more Chris's and I would love to know more about how Daniel's parents and the NYPD dealt with him being a cop and gay. Both humourous and a tear-jerker. Enjoyed
review 2: Super sweet holiday read with a heartwarming reunion. This was light, cute, and fun, exactly what I wanted tonight. Of course there were deeper elements at play here with Chris losing his job due to homophobia and the
... moredanger’s of Daniels’ job on the force, but overall this was a lovely story about finding the love you never thought you had a chance with.Christian Matthews has had a terrible last year. Fired from his job at Sacred Heart High School over an email that outed him as gay he’s been working in his best friends bakery and living in the apartment above it. While he doesn’t mind the job selling muffins and coffee all day it certainly isn’t as fulfilling as teaching was. But with the unfounded accusations the school was tossing around Chris worried he’d never find a teaching job again. Then what happens but his old college crush walks through the door of the shop. Lovely, icing on the cake of his life when Chris can’t seem to string a coherent sentence together.Daniel Bailey loves his job as a cop and has managed to find a good balance for himself as an openly gay one at that. While he may have gone through college to appease his parents he never wanted to follow in the family footsteps. In fact the most influential thing for him in college was his the one man he denied himself. Chris may have been his TA and tutor his freshman year, but Daniel vowed he’d find him again someday. Now he finally has the wherewithal to do so. So maybe it’s a little stalkerish but he’s been in love with the man for years. If showing up at the coffee shop/bakery he’s working at is the only way to get to know Chris again he’ll take it.So I absolutely adored Chris’ nervous, unable to speak, bumbling the first couple of times he ran into Daniel. It was just too cute. I really enjoyed the fact that this was a second chance at love book too. There was just enough history between these two to make a short story work well. You never do forget the one that got away and I loved that Daniel held to his promise and tracked Chris down years later. While this book does take place over the holidays it didn’t seem like as much of a Christmas book as I was expecting. Still I did get the obligatory New York Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting and ice-skating in Central Park. Once Chris got over his initial nerves these two drifted together on a beautiful holiday cloud…ok so it was marred a little by stupid senseless violence, but everyone comes out safe in the end. ☺ All is forgiven when you’re out of the hospital by Christmas. Chris’ victim mentality may have gotten a little much over time due to his inability to stand up and fight for what’s right, but I was ok with it I think because I know how precarious a job working in a school system can be. The image of propriety is often the most important thing. If something has threatened that it’s often a question of act first ask questions later and it’s not often that misunderstandings can be cleared up. I did appreciate Daniel’s attempt to stand up for his man while still walking that fine line of being the good cop. My one small niggle with this, was Sacred Heart calling Chris to offer him his job back with all the stipulations that put in place. While it did give Chris the opportunity to realize he didn’t need what he had in the past, it didn’t seem very logical with what had happened within the story. Them offering him a recommendation would make sense, or his old job back if the other guy was no longer in the picture, but his job for less pay and under the guy that caused the issue, seemed a little far fetched. Still in the end I enjoyed this read a lot. Ms. Scott has a lovely writing style that is very engaging and I will look for more books in the future. I liked both characters and was very satisfied with the story despite its short length. Often with books of this length I’m left feeling something was missing or was rushed. Not so here. This book is well paced and the situations the characters find themselves in were very believable. Well worth the read. ☺ less
