Fail-proofing (Pt 2)

Whenever people think of Virgo, the first few words coming to their minds are perfectionist, analytical, and responsible. Thank you for saying that! As a typical Virgo, I absolutely agree. Knowing myself, this personality has been instilled in me for almost a quarter of a century and has shaped my character in school, work, and personal life. At the same time, I have identified an improvement area in one of these traits…

Overcoming Perfectionism

I gotta admit that I am not very tolerant of disorganization and inefficiency.

To clarify, I am neither a fussy nor neurotic perfectionist in every single detail, but I do follow a set of principles and have high standards for myself. For instance, I respect punctuality a lot and hate being late to dates so I  always aim to be the first one arriving at the restaurants. Having no control over other people’s lateness, arriving on time is the best I can do. And as you can probably tell, if I didn’t arrive by the appointed time by any means, I would be agitated too.

When I was a teenager, scoring 100 was not enough for me as I often studied more to aim for that extra 5 bonus points. 90 was OK, 100 made me happy, 105 made my day. Being a perfectionist helped me maintain very precise work and ethical standard and blessedly achieve success in school and at work. However, this mentality has inevitably made me stay too meticulous on certain things and can easily put tension and stress on myself without knowing.

Today, I may still possess some perfectionist traits but definitely a lot milder. As I grew and soaked in more life experiences in array of things, my perfectionist tendencies are gradually dialed down to a point that I am now making the best out of it and letting go of controlling every detail in my life. Rather than aiming for being perfect, I learnt to be happily satisfied with being good enough and strike a balance between striving for excellence and taking it easy. After all, life is not perfect without some perfect imperfections
