review 1: I am not sure what I just read, but I am pretty sure it was just one of the many children's books being written for adults. Before people jump all over me, let me explain. There seems to be a growing trend of writing a children's book that is something that adults would love/like. Unfortunately, in an effort to cater to adults I think the younger audience is being put on the back burner. This is probably the third or fourth book I've read this year that has this vibe. I can see how an adult would love this story. It has a quirky weird child, a wandering parent, and everything is wrapped up in a 'feel good' moment at the end. I don't see how the target audience could enjoy this. The book is sluggish to the point of boredom. There is a huge focus on the telling stories from ... morethe olden days and a lot of back stories for the characters, but there isn't a lot of here and now happening. The entire focus of the book is about developing the characters and town, but they don't do anything of importance. It just seemed like these detailed characters were floating around, doing nothing. In addition to the lack of anything happening, there were other very irk-some points. Those include - the main character's ability to use the spindiddly word every other sentence (okay it wasn't that bad, but it was said to the point that I hated the word)- the neglectful parent who puts their own needs ahead of their children. I mean really a parent who spends 2-4 weeks in a town and moves on. This uproots the children and makes them go to a completely new school. - the random do-gooder Beedle who is so wonderful even the preacher includes him in his lectures - the quirky aunt who wears a bathroom (yes bathroom) to a school event. I mean, she couldn't put on say, a regular, coat? She only has a bathroom. How nice. I know I am in the minority, but I just couldn't stand this book I am sure there is a target audience out there for it. It just wasn't me.
review 2: This is the story of a girl abandoned by her father and living with her ever wandering mother. They move into her mother's home town which used to be filled with magical people but now has lost most of its magic, leaving only a snicker of magic behind. This book is beautifully written, almost poetry. This author is a talented wordsmith. The problem is that the story she tells is very slow and not much actually happens. Her intended age group will be bored by the story in my opinion. So, two stars for the plot and four stars for the writing gets a 3 star rating. less
