Excuse me, gotta add this book to my favorites list, brb.
But no really, I give this little guy 5/5 stars. I LOVED it. I couldn’t wait to read more. There are some complex characters, but not a ton. This isn’t a Six of Crows but the thing I loved was how magic was presented. I loved how there were twists and characters had to make hard decisions. Magic always seems perfect and unattainable in a lot of stories, but this showed gritty craft magic. This isn’t a magic wand yielding fairy god mother who fixes problems. This is craft that came from things that are beautiful, scary, and meaningful. It is set in a place that doesn’t welcome the craft and truly, reminds me of an extreme version of where I grew up.
I love stories like this. I love having characters whose whole identity isn’t magic. Characters that have this as another sense that they have to row up with and control. This book looks at real emotions and real relationships, even if they are ugly.
The fiends are scary, ugly, beautiful, wild, and extremely symbolic. They are one of my favorite things about the book.
If you ask me – this is a must read. But, only if you want to see a more real version of magic. This is more of what I think the beginning of people having magic would be like. It might end up idyllic, but it has to start somewhere.
Fictional characters that would like this book: Dumbledore, Remus Lupin, Superman, Gamora.
