review 1: The writing is dry, sloppy. And the story jumps all over the place. One minute he's a vegetarian runner, the next minute he talks about still eating meat 4 times a weeks. He meets a girl and the next minute they are married. What? It's a bit bewildering that it's so badly edited but still... I guess the story is interesting/ inspiring. Training tips and vegan recipes are also cool- but again feel rather disjointed, shoved in at the end of chapters. Oh well, don't go in expecting good writing or a page-turner, but if you're into the subject at all it's fun flipping through chapters- you can flip, trust me, and it hardly matters in what order.
review 2: I love running and admire and am inspired by the achievements of Scott Jurek and other ultramarathoners. A r
... moreecently turned vegetarian, I appreciated how he came to be a vegan and I love that he gives recipes of his diet that go along with his training notes. At times he come across as not the most likeable of people, but I think this can often be the case with very driven, focused individuals. The message that protein from meat (I still do eat dairy, so not totally on board with veganism) is not necessary in our diets not only just to function but to transcend normal human limits of endurance, I think, is incredibly important and one which needs to be spread the world over, starting with the US. I would highly recommend this book and have to many friends. less
