One thing I always find myself enjoying about books written by Samantha Chase is that they are easy and light reads. Even when our characters experience something unpleasant, the books never turn to the dark side and I appreciate that.
Our story starts with Ford returning home, after years away. His grandmother’s house is in disrepair after a bad storm and while he normally avoids coming home, this time, he has no choice. But coming home can bring up the past and it’s really clear that Ford has a lot that he doesn’t want to deal with.
One thing I enjoyed was the first run-in that Callie and Ford have. It was somewhat predictable, yet I still enjoyed it and found myself giggling as I imagined what it would have been like to be there.
I admit it was hard to like Ford. He was just so negative at times. I found myself becoming annoyed with him over and over, and it made it hard for me to want Callie’s character to end up with him. Everything seemed very doom and gloom with him. There were a few shining moments, one being when we see Ford remembering the times with his grandpa. I enjoyed seeing the memories come to life and the author told them in such a way that I could see the scene very clearly.
In all honesty, this isn’t my favorite book from this author. I think there were just a few things that fell a bit flat for me. However, I would still rate this book highly because the story is told well, and it’s a great read for when you want to leave the rest of the world behind.
