Fuse Friday focuses on an artist or band featured on the Fuse music network in the mid-2000s. Fuse began to emerge as an alternative to MTV in 2003 dedicating its programming to more underground music scenes.
When was the last time you watched a music video featuring a centaur roaming a countryside inhabited by giant scorpions who saves a mermaid from the clutches of a monster squid? 2005, you say? Well, if you’ve forgotten about Coheed & Cambria’s ‘The Suffering,’ here it is, as entertaining as ever, in 2017:

The music video for ‘The Suffering’ by Coheed & Cambria appeared on Fuse’s new music series Oven Fresh on September 26, 2005. To give a little more context, also appearing on that episode was emerging artist Rihanna’s second hit single, ‘If it’s Lovin’ That You Want.’
The song comes from the band’s third studio album released in 2005 that broke the top 10 on the Billboard 200. Coheed & Cambria is a particularly interesting group having based their first 7 albums, from 2002 to 2013, on a sci-fi/fantasy comic book series called The Amory Wars written by frontman Claudio Sanchez. Coheed and Cambria are actually the names of two of the main characters in the series and the songs describe a galactic power struggle involving kidnap, murder and war.
But you certainly don’t need to be familiar with the comics to enjoy ‘The Suffering’ for what it is; an alt metal track that found its way into the mainstream because of the immense creative talent of the band members namely, Claudio Sanchez. The band is still going strong having released their 8th album, The Color Before The Sun, in 2015, though this latest project is independent of the rest in the sense that it doesn’t follow the story of The Amory Wars. We’ll have to wait and see if this is the new, permanent direction for the band or if they will make a return to outer space some time in the future.
