review 1: A cross between Cormac McCarthy's 'All the Pretty Horses' and Gabriel Garcia Marquez' '100 Years of Solitude'. Meyer traces the rise and fall of a fictional dynastic Texan family from the lead-up to the civil war to current times. Terrific, engaging and absolutely brutal read. Not for the faint of heart, but if you can get past the graphic brutality of the mid-19th century chapters it is well worth the read.
review 2: Very well written. The characters' lives are harsh, but Meyer does a good job of making them compelling enough to stick with them even when times are hard - and they're always hard. Interesting title - my take is that each of the three main characters is a "son" in different ways (even the daughter). Each character shapes the lives of the next one
... mores - and the links are meaningful and not arbitrary or forced. less
