review 1: Kaaron Warren's Slights is an intriguing horror novel, with a main character who repels and fascinates with equal measure. It's a measure of the strength of Warren's writing that I empathised with a protagonist who is a psychopathic serial killer. And not in the Dexter "I'm doing it for all the right reasons" mould either. Steve (Stephanie) kills people so she can see the horror in their eyes as they enter their "dark room", a place she has been several times when she's hovered close to death. The "dark room" is filled with people Steve has slighted during her life; there is no white light leading her to an afterlife. In its place is torture and horror as a parade of people inflict pain on her in retaliation for her slights. The novel uncovers Steve's family life, includin... moreg the dark secrets of her father, a police officer who died when Steve was 10 years old. Steve idolised her father and saw him as a gentle and protective man; however, her older brother Peter had a far different experience growing up. As the story unfolds the truth and lies of Steve's family are exposed, and the reader witnesses her continuing spiral into evil and madness. Yet, all the way through, despite Steve's anti-social behaviour, her wickedness and cruelty, I liked her. Not in a "I wish she was my friend" way (she is not someone I'd want to meet in real life). But there is an innocent desperation within her that meant I could only watch on as she unravelled her life, and that of others, with fascination and sympathy. Steve is a horror, a train wreck, but she is an infinitely interesting, multi-layered character, one of the most complex female protagonists I've read in a while. I do have a minor criticism of the novel, however, and that is the length of the entries relating to the 'stories in the book margins' written by Steve's Auntie Jessie. These stories within stories within stories are an interesting device but I felt they could have been edited down, particularly in the first half of the book. Nonetheless, Slights is a great read if you, like me, like to delve into the circumstances that create a dark soul. Fascinating, horrifying and intriguing, Steve is a character that will stay with you long after the last page has been read. Highly recommended.
review 2: This book was written for any gender any age who likes sci-fi and horrorI would give this book 5 stars out of 5 starsThis has to be one of my favorite books ever. Stevie is so stuck up and snobby and I love the way she over reacts to things. I also love the way she overcomes things herself. I've always wanted to be a person like her. It's also a very gruesome book and I love that. It has such great depth and word choice it's perfect. I feel like Stevie and I would get along perfect;y and I just wanted to cry every time she visited the room. I guess I've always wanted to go back and look at people I've slighted but it would be so terrifying. The theme would be overcoming hard accidents in life and acceptance of being alone. less
