Renegades by Marissa Meyer
5/5
“… If people wanted to stand up for themselves or protect their loved ones or do what they believe in their hearts is the right thing to do, then they would do it. If they wanted to be heroic, they would find a way to be heroic, even without any supernatural powers… it’s easy to say you want to be a hero, but the truth is most people are lazy and complacent…”
Where to even start with this one? Marissa Meyer yet again made me fall even more in love with her writing and her storytelling abilities. She’s an absolute GODDESS when it comes to coming up with these amazing ways to tell stories.
I’ve always been a sucker for superhero stories, getting to see all the awesome super powers out there and the origin stories of those characters. Then you add Meyer in the mix and her usual storytelling and we’ve got a likeable set of *gasp* villains. It’s so interesting to hear things from the “villain’s” side and seeing how they view the world and the “good guys”.
Nova’s story began with heartbreak and it was really cool to see where she was at all that time later, how the world developed around her, and how far she’s come. I loved Queen Bee and her hives, I loved Phobia and his ability to detect fears, Cyanide and his poisons/ his father-figure role, and everyone else on the Anarchists’ side. The more you hear about why they feel the way they do about the Renegades and the current way of life for prodigies, and everything else, it’s hard to disagree with where they’re at.
The Renegades side was really interesting to see because of how broad a range of characters we get to meet. Adrian (AKA Sketch, AAKA The Sentinel) was one of my favorite main characters, I loved his superpower and everything it entailed for him and I loved how truly good he was. He’s the perfect embodiment of the “good side”. I loved the idea of his parents being part of the Council and being a gay couple who adopted him after his mother died. MAX. I cannot get enough of his character and his abilities, and the doors that opened for the Renegades.
From beginning to end, this book steadily progressed and I just absolutely cannot wait to see where the story goes in the next one. I loved every moment between Adrian and Nova, and I loved getting to see the insides of the Renegade headquarters alongside Nova. It was so cool to be introduced to everything as she was and learn all the information as she did. This book did such a good job introducing you to the world, the characters, and everything else and I have absolutely NOTHING bad to say about this book. I’m so stoked already for the next book.
