Gwyneth Paltrow’s Basic Tomato Sauce

A good basic tomato sauce is a MUST for everyone’s recipe stash. Basic tomato sauce is just one of those things that can be used in so many different ways and add a little something extra to your dishes. My absolute favorite made from scratch recipe is from Gwyneth Paltrow’s book It’s All Easy.

Recipe from It’s All Easy By Gwyneth Paltrow

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 6 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced (I just use garlic powder)
  • 4 large fresh basil leaves
  • 2 (28-ounce) cans of whole peeled tomatoes, with their juice.
  • Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper

“Heat olive oil in a large sauté pan over low heat, add the garlic, and cook for 5 minutes. Add 2 of the basil leaves and stir for a minute. Add the tomatoes and their juice and the remaining 2 basil leaves. Turn the heat to high. Bring the sauce to a boil, reduce the heat to low, season with salt and pepper, and let it bubble away for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally and crushing the tomatoes with a wooden spoon. Use immediately or let it cool and refrigerate. ” – It’s All Easy

It is quite honestly the most perfect basic tomato sauce recipe I’ve come across, because it is just so simple and easy to play around with. You can effortlessly make it tangy, spicy, sweet, robust, or whatever kind of saucy goodness you are feeling. My personal favorite way to make it is by adding a dash of parsley, lemon peel, and half of a bay leaf. YUM.
