review 1: This book is about a Girl named Gianna Z. Gianna's life is all about running. She is on the track team at her school and finals are coming up. Gianna has ADD a problem which affects you and your schoolwork. Gianna really hates science. But she has to do a science project where she has to collect 25 leaves by the end of the week. Meanwhile a mean girl named Biancca is trying to stop her moving onto the finals, and if she doesen't collect enough leaves and get a good grades. She can't go to the finals. This is a really fun and pretty fast read. I would reccomend it from 4th to 7th graders.
review 2: This was my first Kate Messner book, and I loved it! The main character, Gianna, is a middle school aged girl, but I think my fourth grade readers will make many con... morenections with this character. Gianna has a hard time staying focused on school projects - lots of connections there! She has a close friend who is always looking out for her and trying to help her. Gianna's father is a funeral director, and they live in a house connected to the funeral home. I think that's a really interesting character detail. She also has a grandmother who is starting to show symptoms of Alzheimers - again - lots of connections. And she has a mean girl on her track team who is trying to steal her spot! Connections, connections, connections. Gianna is another well developed Kate Messner character who demonstrates great wisdom in the choices she makes and the way she deals with difficult situations. I can't wait to introduce this book to my fourth grade students! less
