A Chili Cook-Off Mystery
review 1: First in a new series by Kylie Logan, the story is set in Taos at the fairground. A group of people who travel the "chili" circuit. Maxie and her half sister, Sylvia are daughters of Texas Jack Pierce, well known as king of the chili circuit. He has been missing for 6 weeks and his two daughters have teamed up to promote the family business. Celebrity Chef Carter Donnelly is to judge the Taos Chili Showdown. When Maxie's latest date turns up dead, falling out of Chef Connelly's RV door onto Maxie, she becomes a suspect as she had been seen arguing with him earlier. Lots of characters, a nicely paced story and a surprising ending make it a good read. I found Maxie a little annoying at first but found myself liking her better as the story continued.
review 2: Well
... more, you can't judge a cozy by it's clever title. This one had great promise but started off weak and really never caught my full attention. I read it to the finish only to find out who the killer was and see if I loved the recipes. There was only one recipe (honestly!) and it was for a moderately interesting chili. Maybe I'll read a second one of hers, just to see if they pick up but this one had a very scattered plot, too much detail about things that had happened in the main character's past that was unrelated to the actual murder, and I didn't really find her to be that lovable. I wasn't that keen to see if she ever sorted things out. On to better things! less
