review 1: Trying to catch up on my most trusted authors that I have fallen behind on so this novella came in a package. This is supposedly a prequel to his Columbus Affair release that I have read a couple of years ago. I had to go back and refresh my memory about the background but once done, this story was quite informative about the central characters, villains, that transpired in the “Columbus” novel. I always enjoy Mr. Berry novels and this little ditty was quite fun. It is a novella so creating action and intrigue in such a short span takes talent and I believe Mr. Berry has this in abundance.
review 2: Setting: Hotel Creole – Cap-Haitien – Sans-Souci Palace – Citadelle Laferriere - historical sites in Haiti; boat owner’s home; Malone’s home in Atlant... morea;Theme: Truth of what happened to his brother in law; Malone’s investigation techniques;Characters:Cotton Malone: while still working for Justice Department – though working for special division – Magellan Billet; wife insists he find out what happened;Scott Brown: his brother-in-law – his wife’s sister’s husband; conman; dead – accident or murder?; Brown sold a Columbus book, but removed a page… placed it in a sealed glass bottle, and went diving, hiding it in some wreckage off Haiti – giving the boat owner/friend a new cell phone with gps, and the location marked; he died when diving… air cut off… Gary and Pam: 8 year old son & wife… marriage in trouble – he is gone too muchMasood and Austrian mafiaish/scholars: Austrian collects Columbus related artifacts; had made arrangements to purchase a book/journal of Columbus’ time with Brown… but Brown removed the most valuable page (a unique, triangle shaped Columbus signature)… Summary: Malone noses around… going to the site where Brown died – renting the same boat/driver as Brown… the boat owner held Brown in high regard, and the boat owner helps him out… Malone bought the book, dealt with the Australian with the help of Massod… figured out the meaning of the friends cell/gps and located the missing page… Massood collected it from him… allowing him to keep the copy he had made. less
