So I have this weird thing where I feel like I kind of know Barry Jonsberg (but, ahem, apart
from a brief FB message exchange which I’m sure doesn’t count, I don’t). But I feel like I know him because, you know, I discovered him before he was big.
I read his first book The whole business with Kiffo and the Pit Bull (2004) and then the sequel (my absolute fave!) It’s not all about you Calma (2005). I loved the humour in these books and the Brisbane setting. And I particularly loved that I was able to share them with you, Rose, and that you loved them perhaps even more than I did!
I’ve also read Barry’s My Life as an Alphabet (bittersweet middlegrade) and Cassie which was part of the Girlfriend series. While I enjoyed these books they didn’t quite tap into the laugh out loud humour that I loved in the earlier books. And I must admit that I haven’t read any Barry since because unlike many YA fans I’m not really into that whole dystopian future thing and that seems to be where he’s gone.
So Game Theory – hmm. To be honest, it looks scary. Check out the cover and the tag: I have your sister. I don’t think there’s going to be much to laugh about…but that’s okay. I can be brave…and it’s probably time I branched out and tried something of Barry’s that’s not humour. Ready, set, spaghetti!
