review 1: An excellent novel which brilliantly portrays the life of a peasant in 14th century England - a time of poverty, hunger, exploitation and violence. I thought the supernatural aspect to the ending was unnecessary but this didn't prevent me enjoying the story. Though frankly the serfs should have risen up and killed the lords and their priests. They really needed a Wat Tyler or John Ball, not the Owl Men.
review 2: Another historical fiction set in the 1300s. Maitland captures the time and place, but this book was not as compelling as company of liars. I'm not sure why. Perhaps, there were too many devices to frame the story, which focused on the mix of paganism and religion that marked the era. For a small village, this place had every nasty thing you could imag

Captivating and unforgettable, a good and interesting read told from several points of view.

I loved the multi narratives and the characters. Just hated the ending, felt too abrupt.
