Hunt for the hammerhead: Chapter two

Chapter Two of the Hunt for the Hammerhead was cut short by a cancelled second dive after a very successful and hammerhead-littered first dive I wasn’t able to join. Thus, this blog serves as a condensed update of the dives that didn’t happen.

Captain’s log: Day two

After seeing the ass end of a hammerhead the day before, I had a glimpse of the real thing and knew these sharks were swimming around in the deep, blue, and wonderfully unforgiving waters of the South African East Coast. But, these waters don’t have the reputation of being unforgiving for no reason, and the second dive of the day was cancelled due to worsening conditions.

This is by far one of the worst things about scuba diving (not that there are many) – being kitted up, excited, and ready in your wetsuit, only to be told the dive is cancelled. However, I must say I respect centres like Aqua Planet Dive Centre for making the call. Many reckless cowboys will still go out despite the conditions and this almost always leads to a bad time. A bad diving experience is unwanted, avoidable (for the most part), and can ruin diving for many people.

Despite the disappointment, it contributes to building suspense I suppose. And boy, was suspense necessary. See Chapter Three for the footage.
