MICHAEL Jackson fans have a special treat at 8pm today (Sunday, June 25) and 9pm on Saturday, July 1, on DStv’s Lifetime (channel 131) – Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland, based on Bill and Javon’s book, Remember the Time: The Last Days of Michael Jackson.

The movie chronicles those intimate moments between the late superstar and his children. It also documents the professional turbulence that engulfed Jackson in financial troubles, and forced him back to rehearsals for the ill-fated This Is It tour that led to his early death.

The film is said to help to answer the question fans around the world want to know: What really happened to the King of Pop?

Also lined up for the box tonight (June 25) is a feature on uranium in the Karoo, as part of Carte Blanche, on M-Net and M-Net HD (DStv channel 101) at 7pm today (June 25), and again today, at 8pm, on M-Net Plus 1 (DStv channel 901).

The future of the Karoo hangs in the balance as plans to mine rich uranium deposits through open cast mining inch forward. Residents and organisations have been fighting it tooth and nail, saying it would pollute what little water this arid area has for farming and domestic use.

But a possible new plant species has also been discovered in the proposed mining area and may just halt the entire process – and the Carte Blanche team heads back to Beaufort West for an update on the progress of the mining application.

Also on the show tonight is a feature titled Killer Heart Gene which looks at what some are calling the biggest breakthrough since the first heart transplant in South Africa. A mystery of 20 years of intensive research has been cracked by a team of scientists at UCT medical school. They have identified the killer gene linked to cardiac arrest in young adults, and Carte Blanche meets the scientists behind this medical discovery.

Tonight’s show also looks at how criminals are following tourists, businessmen and even locals from the OR Tambo airport, then robbing them at gunpoint of cash, electronics and valuables. But these heists can only be successfully pulled off with the help of airport insiders. So who is behind this spate of violent robberies in Johannesburg? Carte Blanche investigates a crime trend that’s gaining momentum.

Carte Blanche tonight also looks at how Gift Ngoepe has seen baseball catapult him into international stardom. From playing on the streets of Randburg to competing in Major League Baseball in the US, Ngoepe has reached the pinnacle of professional baseball, becoming the first player from Africa to reach this level in the sport.
