The Internet has really done wonders for the world of pro wrestling. It has allowed fans like myself to be able to watch wrestling from all around the world. It has opened the door for Indy wrestling and allowed smaller promotions to get more exposure than they could have ever imagined.
Of course, the Internet has also opened up every little thing that happens in the world of pro wrestling to insane amounts of unnecessary criticism. That happened once again over the weekend, and it is becoming more and more annoying to deal with every time it does.
The focal point of the argument comes from this spot, which happened at Ring of Honor’s Final Battle show this past Friday:

Go ahead and judge the spot for yourselves. My personal opinion? It is a bit over the top for my taste. I don’t mind seeing athleticism shown off during matches. But that seems a bit too much when it comes to the in ring aspect of pro wrestling. Of course, this is coming from a guy who watches people get murdered in Lucha Underground. Of course that doesn’t happen inside the ring. But I’m personally not a fan of the spot. I’m also not a die hard Young Bucks fan like a lot of people. I think they’ve done some great things for pro wrestling. But they can also be a little over the top at times for my liking, and this spot was one of those times.
Of course, this has turned into a giant war of words on the Internet between the Bucks/Bullet Club and certain people in the wrestling world. As always, the person at the front of the line hating on something the Young Bucks did is Jim Cornette.

Of course Jim Cornette doesn’t really have a leg to stand on when it comes to his time at Ring of Honor. The company wasn’t that successful when he was there. But as most of you know, Jim Cornette is very old school when it comes to the world of pro wrestling. Cornette wants the matches to look as realistic as possible and seeing guys like the Bucks do flippy shit has always pissed him off. It is nothing new for Jim Cornette to criticize the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega.
The current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier was also dragged into the argument as well when he shared his opinion on the matter.

This caught the eye of Cody Rhodes, who had an exchange with Cormier:

But perhaps my favorite response from Cormier was this one to Flip Gordon:

And who would have thought that in this world of pro wrestling, UFC Fighter Daniel Cormier would have the opinion I agree with the most in all of this. Cormier gets a lot of shit for those of you who don’t follow the UFC. He’s perhaps the greatest light heavyweight of all time. But he never beat Jon Jones, who is a drug cheat and truly awful person. But that’s another story.
Daniel Cormier is a big fan of pro wrestling. He enjoys the hard hitting action in pro wrestling. He wasn’t a fan of the spot. That’s fine. And guess what, whether you liked it or not, IT WAS YOUR DAMN OPINION AS A FAN OF PRO WRESTLING.
There is no right or wrong in this situation. It is not like we are arguing over whether robbing a bank is wrong. This is an argument over a spot in pro wrestling. Some people liked it, some people didn’t. I have no idea why everyone involved in this has to be so defensive. Cormier has every right to not like the spot. It is his opinion. Of course then you have Cody and Brandi Rhodes, Flip Gordon and everyone else involved defending it and being super sensitive about it. Of course, they are playing into the publicity of all of it and getting more attention drawn to them as well. So it could be a marketing ploy on there part. But I just think they are being a bit too defensive from their end of things.
But I’m not here to argue that. I’m not here to start an argument at all. I’m here to let every wrestling fan know that they have to stop being so damn sensitive and defensive about things in the world of pro wrestling. Why can’t we just have an opinion about things and debate that as rational people? Instead, name calling gets involved and people dig their boots in the trenches and let you know that they are supposedly right and you are wrong. Just go look at a wrestling message board. You see arguments like this popping up all over the place. Hell, go look at Dave Meltzer’s Twitter. Every day there is some new argument that sprouts up on it. People call out Dave and he is quick to shoot them down. But then it turns into a war of words.
Pro Wrestling is not a right or wrong narrative. Being a fan of pro wrestling allows you to have opinions on certain things. And those opinions are your own. It doesn’t need to spark a war on social media. If you enjoyed that spot, great. If not, great. It is a matter of taste. I’ve opened up my mind to all different aspects of pro wrestling. It is okay to have a difference of opinion, but to get super defensive about it just makes everyone look bad in the long run.
