Joestein Gaarder – The Ringmaster’s Daughter

______________________________________________________

Petter is one of the most unique protagonists I have ever had a pleasure reading about. Gaarder’s fluent and rich writing style is once again one of the stronger points of the book and, like always, he isn’t afraid to tackle complex topics and darker sides of his characters. The ending could’ve been better executed but isn’t incomplete in any way.

Petter’s childhood, the relationship with his mother, his years as a young adult, then starting out with his “business” were engaging and intense. He sells synopses to everyone who fail to come out with their own original ideas while weaving the web around the modern literature world and building a respectful reputation. The theme of a father finding a long lost daughter runs through the novel throughout all important points. My favorite was the story of a chess game with living pieces set in Scotland.

Gaarder’s books usually have philosophical undertones with a goal to make the readers think about themselves. With the exception of few quotes, there is not a mention of philosophy whatsoever. The writing is vivid and it questions if people like Petter truly exist in reality, and if they do, how they endure their apathy.

A boy, and later man of fertile imagination, Petter is definitely one of the most ambiguous characters I’ve ever read about. I wasn’t sure whether I liked or loathed him. He’s intelligent and has broad interests, but he’s also emotionless, cold and manipulative. Being on the constant line between reality and imagination, his intelligence and education give him all possible advantages to become extraordinary writer. Petter’s brain is a true minefield of imagination with unexpected twists and layered plots. However, his anonymity means the world to him. One of the underlying themes is how he yearns for solitude, but never feels lonely.

Petter’s relationship with his mother and Maria, among other women in his life, were especially fascinating. Despite having mostly physical relationship with them and lack of desire to go any further, he didn’t literally used them for sex, it was more like he was trying to realize what was missing inside of him. I don’t think he ever found that missing piece.

K.K.
