Pineo & Loeb is an outfit better known for its electronic output and live instrumentals than for laying down retro-feel hip hop vibes. It’s this deviation from the norm that makes new single Don’t Go so interesting – moreso because it’s a fantastic output that feels as if the duo are well-versed in the genre.
While a lot of the appeal of the track does come from the chilled out, late-night-soul-feel instrumentation that the duo is crafting, the real power on the track is the vocalwork. The single features the lyrical gymnastics of Quake Matthews, whose flow on the verses is arguably the backbone of the entire track, as well as sublime chorus melodies courtesy of the soulful Concordia.
With such a well-balanced roster of talent and abilities, it’s hardly surprising that the track is among the best hip hop offerings of 2017 so far.
