review 1: "We Had It So Good" is a difficult book for me to like. I wanted to, I really did. However, sadly, I just didn't care for it. Ploughing through the first hundred or so pages was turgid going, and I seriously considered abandoning the book. In the end, I finished it, with the reaction of "so what?". It's very hard to like any of Grant's characters or care about what happens to them. With the possible exception of Andrea, they appear to be shallow, self obsessed individuals, which makes it tough to empathise in any way with them. In addition, the book appeared to me to lack any coherent plot; it's more of a "slice of life" story of the Newman family during a particular timeframe. I may well give another Linda Grant novel a try, just to say whether I like any of her other wor... morek better.
review 2: I really cannot get into the writing style at all, it just did not captivate me. Usually I have patience for these type of books but this one was a major exception. It came switching stories from past to present, it was perplexing to keep up with. For now on, I am going to stay away from books that does not seem remotely interesting by the synopsis and not give it a chance. The writing style was a huge flaw to me, if you are not consistent with the the few pages, I just sadly lost interest. less

Interesting view of the 70's through British eyes. Nostalgic read if you were 21 in 1968.
