The Boleyn Trilogy
review 1: The last book of the trilogy. I haven't read the first two, but this one is filled with sadness and betrayal. Minuette and her husband Dominic were separated by the furious king who intended to marry his childhood friend. Minuette eventually gave birth to a daughter and they lived together after the king's death. Elizabeth ascended to the throne. Everything is back in history. Dominic still left me the impression that he was the honorable among the four friends. He dared to defy the king to keep his wife. Elizabeth became a little sneaky when she established the shadow court. But in general, the ending is quite satisfactory for the fates of the royal court.
review 2: Well, based on how book 2 ended (Minuette and Dominic's secret wedding), I knew that the crap w
... moreas going to hit the fan. Boy did it ever. I knew it would be messy, but I found the extent of it hard to stomach. It made the book less diverting than the previous 2. William in particular started turning into a twisted despot. I was also a little disappointed that history seemed to turn out much as it did anyways (though yes, some major twists happen first. Who can tell how those change things long term). Not knowing the particulars of Tudor history, I don't know how much the author drew upon real events, and I can't gauge how much of this trilogy is plausible. Overall, I enjoyed it and found the characters compelling and likeable (with the exception of William in this book). Elizabeth, in particular, was done justice to. However, I would be more satisfied if it had altered history more radically, and if William hadn't spiralled out of control. less
