review 1: 3.5/5. Taming of the Shrew kind of story with a difference. The shrew in question, Lady Ophelia was not nasty to all suitors, just Drake Darling, who was plucked from the gutter by a kindhearted ducal couple and raised as their son, but who remained tormented by violence from his past. Oh, and her snootiness also extended to all working class people around her whom she regarded as inferior beings purely created to serve her needs and who merited no common courtesies. She found herself in trouble, half drowned in stinky Thames and our Darling boy fished her muddy amnesiac body out and brought her to his home. When he cleaned her up and found to his horror that he had just rescued his tormentor, it was too far to carry her back to the river bed to return her from whence she... more was found. So instead, he decided to teach her a lesson in humility. While the concept was okay, she mellowed rather quickly and the book later turned into a competition of who has the greatest inferiority complex (like that oxymoron?). While I can comprehend her foul treatment of Drake following revelation of her past trauma, I cannot see how the experience justified her trampling on hard-working servants or others of lower social standing or why she became a self-centred spoilt brat who spent far more than the household could afford (even when she was supposedly working for Drake). Not the best effort from the usually awesome Lorraine Heath.
review 2: The story is interesting and different (farfetched, but this is historical romance after all). The subject matter, especially in the last 100 or so pages is not for everyone - don't start this if you are not prepared to go through an emotional turmoil along side the heroine. Although she starts out as an A grade bitch and her despicable behavior is in no way excused later on, she does grow on both the reader and the hero. He on the other hand does some highly questionable things himself through the book, but still ended up liking him. All in all, an enjoyable escape, not nearly as entertaining as some of the other supreme offerings from the author. less

Really good until the reveal of incestuous rape of heroine. Then rushed toward conclusion.
