World Championship Boxing In New York

Errol Spence Jr cemented his place as one of the best pound for pound fighters by dominating Lamont Peterson at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Spence established his jab from the very start and was in total control of the first four rounds. He then put Peterson on the floor in the fifth. Peterson bravely fought on but Spence again had Peterson in trouble in round 7 before the fight was stopped at the start of round 8. It was Spence’s first defence since beating Kell Brook and with some big fights potentially in the coming months available in the Welterweight division, Spence will be right in the mix.

On the same card Robert Easter Jr defended his lightweight title with a controversial split decision point win against Javier Fortuna of the Dominican Republic. Fortuna used a classic counter punch strategy and supporters of Easter Jr accused his opponent of running for the whole fight. This was not helped by the fact Fortuna was docked a point in Round 2 for grabbing at Easter’s neck, a point which proved crucial as the fight would have been scored a draw. The narrow win means Easter Jr is 21-0 and still unbeaten but a re-match with Fortuna must be a possibility.
