review 1: ...another victim in the 5-star system. I'd give this 4 1/2 stars. Almost there. If you want a summary, there are a thousand Goodreads reviews that'll give you that. So, just my thoughts:A lovely little novel. Delicate but not prissy. Magical but not quite magical realism (some may argue that point). Well-drawn characters - but not so well drawn that I actually I actually felt I knew any of them, not really. The story is sad and thoughtful and hopeful ... and not ...I would have liked a bit more prophesy, I think, or maybe more wrap-up for my American completist brain ... though that has me wondering if this is even an appropriate wish; in the end, I suspect Lukas gave us just the amount of known and unknown that he intended.Recommended.

... moret of this book was 2 stars, then it built to 4 stars, then whoosh, down it fell with a rushed ending to 1 star. So I averaged it out to 3 stars. Lovely imagery is evoked through the (over) use of simile, and one can almost feel the world in which this story takes place. Some others have commented on here about the geography and history being wrong, but I don't care. The world developed is lovely and intriguing. Yet I'm left wondering why it was developed. Each character is not QUITE developed in as much depth as I would enjoy, and the story seems to be building to something when... Nothing. NOTHING!!! It just ends. It's not even ending in a cliffhanger. It's as if the author got tired of writing and said, "I'm done," and that was that. less

A lot of buildup for a lame ending.
