John the Baptist Said It First*

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2)

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)

But what does that actually mean?

re·pent rəˈpent/ verb verb: repent; 3rd person present: repents; past tense: repented; past participle: repented; gerund or present participle: repenting
  • feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one’s wrongdoing or sin. “the priest urged his listeners to repent”
synonyms: feel remorse, regret, be sorry, rue, reproach oneself, be ashamed, feel contrite; More

be penitent, be remorseful, be repentant “the senator claims to have repented”
    • view or think of (an action or omission) with deep regret or remorse. “Marian came to repent her hasty judgment”
    • archaic feel regret or penitence about. “I repent me of all I did”
  • Origin Middle English: from Old French repentir, from re- (expressing intensive force) + pentir (based on Latin paenitere ‘cause to repent’). *in the New Testament. What if it means something else?

As sometimes happens when I hear a word in English, I begin  to go down different neural pathways, usually listening for the seemingly unintended ‘pun’. That’s what happened on Friday in our “Faith and Science” group meeting.

It was the use of “pent” that did it.

Is this another one of those ‘hidden in plain sight’ concepts?

    I wonder…

    The Orans Posture

No matter how you look at it, the outspread hands signify something sacred. Could it be that the priest in the Eucharist is showing us the way to actually pray?
