The Book Matchmaker || A Blind Date with a Book #2

Last Wednesday I received my second and last *sob* rep package from The Book Matchmaker. Right after I received the book, still gorgeously wrapped, I was able to snap some photo’s so I could meet my bookish blind date the very same evening. Read on to find out what book I found inside!

This time I chose my blind date based on four words and I chose: mountain, chilling, courage and eerie. I immediately had my suspicions of the book it could be and the first book that came to mind was The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin, which was recently adapted into a movie. All words fitted perfectly with that story, except for “eerie” … When I say that it’s a book from 2016 and a “ghost story”, are you able to guess which book it is, without peeking below?

First some more on The Book Matchmaker, to build up the suspension on what book I got as a blind date. The Book Matchmaker is a small business located in Shrewsbury, UK, that sells blind dates with books, but they also have gorgeous gift boxes! Every season they have different ways of wrapping and the one I received Wednesday fell in their Christmas theme. Here you can see what their Autumn theme looked like! Talking about the wrappings: each one is personally wrapped and every wrapping is different, so it’s like the book you get is especially wrapped for you! Not only do you get a book, you also get to choose if you want to enjoy tea, coffee or a hot chocolate together with your book.

Now … *drumroll* onto the book!

Because I didn’t know any books that take place in the mountains and is eerie, the book was a total surprise! I got Thin Air by Michelle Paver – the cover is absolutely stunning and the blurb sounds really thrilling. Although I haven’t yet read anything by this author myself, I heard other bookstagrammers that a previous book by her Dark Matter was really good!

You can also enjoy your own blind date with a book! If you decide to do so and purchase from The Book Matchmaker, don’t forget to use my code BOOKMATCHREP10 for 10% off!! The package you get contains a blind book date, that you either choose by four words or a genre, a hot drink (coffee, tea or hot chocolate) and a love letter from your book!

Blurb of Thin Air

In 1935, young medic Stephen Pearce travels to India to join an expedition with his brother, Kits. The elite team of five will climb Kangchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain and one of mountaineering’s biggest killers. No one has scaled it before, and they are, quite literally, following in the footsteps of one of the most famous mountain disasters of all time – the 1907 Lyell Expedition.

Five men lost their lives back then, overcome by the atrocious weather, misfortune and ‘mountain sickness’ at such high altitudes. Lyell became a classic British hero when he published his memoir, Bloody, But Unbowed, which regaled his heroism in the face of extreme odds. It is this book that will guide this new group to get to the very top.

As the team prepare for the epic climb, Pearce’s unease about the expedition deepens. The only other survivor of the 1907 expedition, Charles Tennant, warns him off. He hints of dark things ahead and tells Pearce that, while five men lost their lives on the mountain, only four were laid to rest.

But Pearce is determined to go ahead and complete something that he has dreamed of his entire life. As they get higher and higher, and the oxygen levels drop, he starts to see dark things out of the corners of his eyes. As macabre mementoes of the earlier climbers turn up on the trail, Stephen starts to suspect that Charles Lyell’s account of the tragedy was perhaps not the full story…
