This San Francisco classic dates back to 1949 and is a favorite amongst locals and tourists.
House of Prime Rib is an old school staple in the San Francisco dining scene and this was my first time visiting. To be honest, I had been hesitant to try the restaurant because it’s not necessarily my cup of tea. Even though I’m not a vegetarian, this seemed a bit over the top. I was astonished at how packed the restaurant was on a weekday and I assume it’s like that every night. Their speciality is of course prime rib, an English tradition, where you choose the portion that you would like. You also receive a salad, tossed table side, a choice between mashed potatoes or baked potato, a choice between creamed spinach or creamed corn, and Yorkshire pudding.

They dress the salad table side in a slightly dramatic way by pouring the dressing from up high and mixing all the ingredients vigorously. While the salad wasn’t bad, it just seemed ordinary. I think I would have preferred a classic caesar salad with crunchy croutons and shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.
They had a choice between mashed potatoes or baked potato and since I always eat mashed potatoes I decided to have the baked potato. Anything with potatoes I absolutely love and I was juiced about all the various toppings. The waiter split the potato in half table side, put a nice dab of butter and piled it high with bacon bits, sour cream, and chives. Sooo simple but sooo good.
The main attraction is of course the prime rib. I actually chose the smallest portion available, city cut, and it was still a pretty hefty amount (I only finished about 1/2 and took the rest home for Kuma). While the flavor was delicious, I think prime rib just isn’t for me. I prefer a small amount of steak instead. I did however love the creamed spinach with pieces of meaty bacon.
A classic chocolate cake with chocolate frosting with whipped cream and raspberry sauce. The cake itself was moist and rich and just had the right amount of frosting without being overpowering.
House of Prime Rib is a must amongst carnivores and the perfect place to bring a large group of friends of family. I can see how this restaurant has maintained its popularity over the decades with its homey food and lively atmosphere. While the restaurant isn’t what I typically like, I enjoyed my experience and would rate it a 7.5/10.
