review 1: It's always so fun to find a new author, and this is my new find, even though she has been around a while. Fred Vargas is the nom de plume for Frédérique Audoin-Rouzeau, a French historian and archeologist who writes mysteries on the side. In this Commissaire Adamsberg mystery, Adamsberg tries to integrate his newly found adult son with a series of crimes out in the country in Normandy and a mystical showing of ghost riders whose appearance means several deaths. He also tries to keep an old friend/criminal from being framed by evil rich men and manages his motley crime squad crew, who have several rich subthemes among themselves. Cleverly written and I felt I learned something about how French bureaucracy operates (or doesn't). But, most of all, I was highly enterta... moreined.
review 2: After a few positive reviews from fellow Goodreader P. L. Sullivan, I decided to give Fred Vargas' Adamsberg novels another go. (I wasn't thrilled with her debut, "The Chalk Circle Man," and the one-off entitled "The Three Evangelists" came together only at the very end -- not always a bad thing, if you can maintain the momentum.) The main character is appropriately quirky, and Vargas' readers have to allow that Adamsberg's unorthodox approach is leading us to a great summation of facts. My positive review is anchored by the wonderful atmospherics and nuances of French culture that lie between the heavier plot points. I still have a feeling, however, that I am missing the best of her work. I'll keep digging. less
