review 1: Chess and Terrible - one of the most unique couples I have ever read about. I think it is fair to say that both of them qualify as anti-heroes/heroines. They come from violence and fear - and their jobs require perpetuating it everyday. There is always pain, guilt, shame, fear, violence, lust and darkness in their world - but somehow their story is one of the most beautiful and romantic things I have ever read about. To be honest I skimmed through every parts of the book that didn't have these two together or thinking about each other. I really think it's their relationship that drives this series and I can't get enough!! The only other time I have encountered such earthy, bone-deep primal passion in a couple is between Mac and Jericho Barrons. Chess and Terrible's encount... moreers are so explicitly violent and explosive, it makes me literally breathless when I am reading it.ChessMan..she is really fucked up in so many ways. She's a long time drug addict, in her own words she is 'selfish and sneaky', she lies all the time, she betrayed the one person who loves her - she really is a mess. But at the same time she is so human - when I read about her thoughts, it hurts so much sometimes that someone could think about themselves that way - but sometimes it's blood-curdling to read because there are echoes of my own dark thoughts. None of the books in this series are happy reads - but for some reason, reading about Chess, about how she grows to deal a little better with her self-hatred, to believe just a little in Terrible's love, it warms my heart. TerribleI know we all say don't judge a book by it's cover - but really, most of the time I like my heroes to be hot/sexy/attractive ect ect because who isn't attracted to a hot man? But Terrible is ugly - not just his scarred face, but his sideburns, his stupid haircut, his bowling shirts but most of all that he is a thug - a drug lord's enforcer, he deals in prostitutes, killing and violence; but what the hell - I LOVE HIM. I admit that I am shallow in that it is easier to love a good-looking man, and often when I read romances I like the descriptions of how attractive the man is; but here I really didn't give a shit. In fact I LIKED the fact that Terrible was - well terrible. He was so magnetic, and real and vital it was breathtaking. I'm a little sleep deprived right now so my words and thoughts are all jumbled - but I really wouldn't mind having my own Terrible. There are so many issues this series touches upon I really should read through it properly. I probably will some time in the future - but I don't regret skimming and focusing on Chess and Terrible because hot damn what an awesome couple they are!
review 2: As dark and gritty as Chess' world is, god I love it! The author pulls no punches with Chess' character, she is flawed, very much so. A lying, drug-addicted junkie who somehow manages to hide it from the Church, her employer and function as a Debunker, disproving hauntings. This one sees her relationship with Terrible grow as others disintegrate....and for once Chess' drug addiction might actually help... less
