I made the sketch above quickly (in less than 2 hours. I have found that I can capture an idea quicker if I choose paper in a tint that closely matches either the subject or the background. The sketches below took longer, but the tinted paper was essential. For the picture on the left, the masonry materials used in the buildings were colors slightly different from the paper, so a minimal amount of color was added to suggest the majority building materials. I was able to put most of my focus on what made each building different. The paper helped unite them. For the picture on the left, the paper helps us understand the water is shallow and warm. The ducks also stand out because of the color contrast.
