review 1: There's adult action from the start as call girl Wilhemina Wells enjoys the patronage of a well-off man in the thriving new town of San Francisco. In the 'Barbary Quarter' Billie works in a house run by a Creole lady, who provides young women of colour to wealthy men. While her lawyer client, a Spanish-American named Drew Yates, treats her well, she knows he will marry respectably. When Billie finds herself expecting, there's no telling who the father is. Girls can be found floating in the Bay if they give trouble, so she has to knuckle down to laundry and go to live with a midwife and root woman near the whale oil rendering plant. She's determined to have the baby and give it for adoption. Fate intervenes and she wonders if the child could be Drew's...The multicultural... more aspects are extremely well handled, showing us how Spanish-descended people were being pushed out of land and professions that Americans wanted to control. I learnt a lot from this tale and saw the perennial double standard in action, when a woman has no way to earn except in a brothel and is shunned by good society, while a man can walk in and out of brothels with impunity. The women are far stronger characters than the men and the lively, rapid pace of the tale keeps us reading. I really enjoyed the well-written tale and recommend it as an unusual adult romance.
review 2: You have to love historical romances to read these types of books. The story of Billie and Drew is cute and sweet, who have been lovers for the last two years. When Drew leaves town for seven months, billie finds herself with child. That is when thing go from bad to worse. Billie makes a deal with the owner of the Black Pearl to find someone to raise her unborn child. Little does she realize there is nothing like a mothers love. The twist comes when Billie shows up at Drew's family ranch with Drew's infant son. With a price on her and her sons head Billie ask Drew for his protection for their son. This is a great romance to read if you love HERA.!! This is a series so start with Destiny's Embrace, and enjoy three strong men fight to win the love of the women who hold the key to their hearts. less
