review 1: FIRST LINE REVIEW: "Though the digital clock on the bedside table in his hotel room read 5:17, Jack Griffin, suddenly wide awake, knew me wouldn't be able to get back to sleep." And what I knew after reading the first 50 pages is that I should have honored my "50 page rule" and quit reading this book! I love Russo. His "Straight Man" is on my top 10 list, but this one was a wearying slog. Dull and life-less. Sigh...at least it was short.
review 2: I surprised myself by liking this book. It was a random choice off the library shelf but it ended up being a great read. I'm finding myself enjoying books about older couples more and more, and Richard Russo did a good job of portraying a long-time married couple going through a rough time. My favorite line from this
... morebook is this: "Odd that the future should be so difficult to bring into focus when the past, uninvited, offered itself up so easily for inspection." I'm going to pick up his other books to read soon. less

Not a literary classic, but I loved this story. Plus New England is the primary setting!

This should be a 3.5. The first half was slow, and the second half read faster.

This is a recommended read. Satisfying and emotional on several levels.
