review 1: It was alright. The only thing that saved this book from being 2 stars was some of the more in-depth characters. The main characters were more washed up than the secondary ones. I wish this book had been more about Sebastian, who really was the star of the whole book. Rose is a typical aspiring maid who, no doubt, has a secret in her past. Her storyline is perdictable except when Sebastian tampers with it. Ada is the obvious perfect daughter who confronts her stepmother, as typical. Ada and Mrs. Templeton's relationship is archetypical and not surprising at all. The secrets are just as fake as Ada. Her sister Georgiana can be liken to Downton Abbey's Lady Sybil in the fact that since she is the younger sybling, she is somehow "wilder". Mrs. Templeton's daughter Charlotte i... mores a sad character whose faults show through her cheep chiffon. The Indian characters are different. It was interesting to hear the political arguements of the day and how often they came up. It was also interesting to see college life in the 1910s, how the University was most occupied by the wealthy British upper class men, excluding women and other races from the right to education. That was basically the jist of the whole book.
review 2: This is like reading a YA soap opera that's set in the early 1900's in England. You follow the Averley's through their London events and social calendars. Most of the book takes place at their estate in Somerton. Ada and Georgianna are the daughters of Earl Westlake. Their mother is deceased and their father has just married Countess Fiona who has three kids of her own. It's a Brady Bunch situation with jealousy amongst the step siblings, maids & valets knowing too much secret info, marriage proposals, secret love child, murder, stolen kisses and revenge. less

Pretty good if you love Downton Abby or English lit YA (I'm looking at you "Emma").
