The Book of Secrets by Cynthia Voigt

The Book of Secrets by Cynthia Voigt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I fell entirely in love with the story of the identity-swapping Mister Max. This is, at its most basic, a story about a detective–although Max insists he is a solutioneer–but I enjoyed it for its theme of independence, its humor, and all Max’s wonky friends. The story is mainly told from Max’s (3rd person POV) point of view, with a smattering of other POVs belonging to his friends and acquaintances (and at one point, (view spoiler)[his captors (hide spoiler)]) that allow the reader to see Max from a different angle. Often I read a book and wonder how the other characters feel about the main one–do they think (s)he is nice? mean? evil? strange? smart?–and the multiple POVs answered those questions from many different angles.

I enjoyed touring the town with Max. Now, what’s up with his parents?
