review 1: Actual rating: 3.5 stars. I almost gave this book 4 stars. Libby is a great character. She's smart both fashion and history wise. She doesn't fall for Cam immediately. She's in control of her girl's camp from the beginning. Garrett is a nerd but isn't shy and doesn't lack self-confidence. The setting was great and even Ashling and the feud was fun. However, there were cliches that hurt the book. Dev is your stereotypical gay friend character and Cam reveals his true colors a little too suddenly. The haunting was a little weird too. I was under the impression that it was going to be a bigger deal in the story than it was and when it was resolved, it felt tacked on.
review 2: I was primed to relish this fun "light romance". I loved the introduction to the charac
... moreters and the plot -- so much so that I talked it up to my daughters (one of whom is a college graduate in costume design and the other who elected to snatch the book up and voraciously read it whilst I was at work). In this awkward mash-up of Cinderella and Pride&Prejudice, the author makes it to page 130 before dropping the F-bomb. Sigh. Why? Why? Why? clutter an otherwise fun book with potty-mouth? Then the author plunges into beyond-belief abuses of costume. Predictably, our heroine opts for the Wickham stand-in character. Regrettably, the Darcy stand-in hardly qualifies. What her high-school designer friend pulls off is simply not going to happen in the time frame and budget allotted him -- but hey, he's the fairy godmother stand-in, right? (If you're familiar with Percy Jackson, this character is Grover-like and perhaps the best element of the story).Strike One: gaping holes in knowledge of fashion historyStrike Two: over taxation of my "willing suspension of disbelief"Strike Three: languageThree strikes, you're out. less
