review 1: The Cut is a classic noir crime novel. The hero/protagonist kills, exploits women but also places his life in danger to free an innocent adolescent from capture and certain death. OK so far. But I found the story's plotting weak and the characters weak and too much like cardboard cutouts. But the dialogue is crisp descriptions of physical features of characters, their clothing and the streets of Washington all harmonious with a contemporary noir piece. Good entertainment.
review 2: Writer for "The Wire." Writing was good, story was fine (who stole the weed?), but my favorite part about it was that the author included music playlist at the end; songs he was listening to at the time of writing, and songs that the main character listened to - or would've list
... moreened to. "It would be guitar-based and it would be smart and rock hard. Meaning, no Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, or any of their kind." Playlist includes: Stones, Wilco, The Clash, Gregory Isaacs, Burning Spear, The Who, Hendrix, Toots, Pavement, Television, Think Lizzy, etc. less

Dull and a bit hackneyed. Surprising, given the good reviews, but the book just never elevates.
