The Great Wall of China

This largest wall with the size of 13,171 miles has been built to mark and defend the North border of China, it is the most important architectural structure never built by the man at the same time in length, on-surface and mass. This wall is really impressive during thousands of miles close to Beijing. It has been built with stone, cement, some bricks of clay and it was discovered recently that it had been incorporated 3 % of glutinous rice into the mortar which had considerably strengthened its resistance. There were a legend saying that its solidity and its whiteness was bound to the presence of human bones, but it happens to be false (fortunately!).

The Great wall is one of main tourist attractions of the country, approximately 15 to 16 million people visit the Wall of China every year.

In my first picture you can see one starting point to walk on the wall, and you can see at the foreground a structure build for defense and sleeping quarters. These buildings are very colorful and of course very traditional.

When I went there I was in Beijing and it was during October so it was pretty cold with a lot of fog. But still, it was incredible to see the length of this big wall, this infinite landscape.

You should also know that if you want to climb on it, you have to be sporty because sometimes you can run into stairs that are at the limit to be vertical so it is very exhausting to cross those (You can see it in the back of my first photo).

In my second picture you can see the wall from the top and you can notice the continuity of it, this is quite symbolic to say I walked on the Great wall don’t you think?

My third picture shows red ribbons, you can read on them messages, wishes and personal entreaties from the visitors. You buy one of those (about $3) and then you can hang it with the others in hopes that forces from the heavens might help these wishes come true. Some might call it superstition but some would tell you the activity gets results. You can find these ribbons at the beginning of the wall when you are at the bottom of it.

Of course, I will say that if you are in Beijing you should totally go to the Great Wall, this is something to do once in a lifetime especially if you had the opportunity to go to China.
