review 1: Not sure if I would have loved this as much if not for the fact that the Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my favorite books, but I enjoyed this sci-fi adaptation a lot. The characters were cute and their struggles relatable. This book didn't feel quite so dangerous as the original- I guess I just assumed Justen would be able to undo the reduction at some point regardless, but it was still exciting enough that I wanted to keep reading.
review 2: In some ways "Across a Star-Swept Sea" is much more interesting than "For Darkness Shows the Stars," namely the sci-fi and fantasy aspects. And like the first tale in the series, it offers up a large cast of appealing characters (though they're less nuanced in this story). It also shares the primary fault of FDSTS: repetition
... more; I can't imagine that even young, slow readers need either the back story or the characters' quandaries rehashed quite so much. In other ways, however, "Across a Star-Swept Sea" falls short of the standard set by FDSTS: it drags quite a bit in the back half, the costuming focus seems a bit overdone (and too reminiscent of "The Hunger Games"), and the main relationship lacks both heat and intensity. Since I still quite enjoyed this brisk, imaginative read, four stars it is. less
