Shashi Tharoor is like Kim Kardashian for a new breed of aspirational Indians trying to outgrow Chetan Bhagat. Whatever Tharoor says (or doesn’t) “breaks” whatever little echo chamber they inhabit on the internet.
Be it Tharoor’s verbose outrage (“exasperating farrago of distortions, misrepresentations & outright lies“) or a simple typo (who vs whom), you can be assured that a large mass of digital desis will explode in paroxysms of delight.
Never mind that faux British accent.
And so it is on the third day of the new year when the glib Trivandrum MP is busy collecting accolades for countering “Visa Mata” Sushma Swaraj on the place of Hindi in the external affairs ministry.
Of course, Tharoor is right, except that the the UN meets but seldom, and the deleterious effect of such “Hindi imposition” is felt by a tiny minority of overpaid diplomats, lying outside their country, with interpreters hissing into their headphones.
The real question that Shashi Tharoor (and others of his ilk) should be asking, is: “What purpose is being served by the BJP trying to make Hindi an official language in the United States of India?”
Below is a quick list of the names of the supposedly “people-centric” schemes and programmes launched by the government of ThiruNarendra Modi.
If Tharoor thinks the makkal of Tamil Nadu or Bengal understand what they stand for, then ipso facto they should have no objection to his gripe about Hindi being imposed on the United Nations!

Of course, the Congress is similarly guilty of imposing Hindi. But was the BJP voted to power to photocopy its methods and prove cynics right: that it is a “Hindi, Hindu, Hindutva” party?
