review 1: 4.5I enjoyed it way more than I thought in the beginning. I do like crime stories, but I enjoy ones with emotional motivation, without drug cartels, and international politics. But I liked it a lot. It had a great structure for an investigation novel, the clues and pieces were really well placed. I liked most of its humour, the characters ended up being really likeable, and I adored Hugo and Tom's friendship. The minus half stars:-it took a while for me to get interested in and to root for Hugo-he could have been introduced with "more life"-the differences between US and France was annoyingly exaggarated... come on, no way there is no street shooting and no serial killer in France, and that all American FBI agents would wear jeans and wescos going out for dinner...-I found ... morethere was too much sexual innuendo-I don't like it when random foreign words are thrown in a dialogue, just because in principle, it is not in English or the language of translation... this "solution" is annoying, pretentious and cheap
review 2: Our hero, Hugo Marston, has befriended a Paris bookseller. Shortly after buying a book, he sees his friend being kidnapped. After police inaction, he and a friend with shadowy CIA connections look into matters. His friend has more of a past than anticipated. And the bookselling world in Paris has gotten quite complex. This was a well told first tale, I am looking forward to reading more in this series. less
